Why September is a Lovely Time to Visit Norfolk

Why September is a Lovely Time to Visit Norfolk

There’s something rather special about Norfolk in September.

The busiest days of summer begin to fade, the beaches become a little quieter, the evenings start to feel cosy and the countryside begins its gentle transition into autumn.

And while everyone else is talking about getting back into routines, we think September is a pretty good time to escape them.

Here are a few reasons why we think September is one of the loveliest times to visit Norfolk – and why Happy Valley makes a great base for your stay.

Quieter beaches and coastal walks

One of the best things about September is that you can still enjoy the Norfolk coast without quite as many people around. Head to Hunstanton, Old Hunstanton or Heacham for a stroll along the beach, a paddle in the sea or simply to sit and watch the waves. The days can still be wonderfully warm, but wrapping up in a jumper for the evening has its own kind of appeal. And, of course, a beach day isn't complete without finding somewhere for coffee and cake afterwards.

Go on safari at Watatunga

Fancy doing something a little different? Our friends at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve are just a short drive from Happy Valley. Set across 170 acres of Norfolk countryside, Watatunga is home to an incredible collection of deer, antelope and birds. You can explore the reserve in a guided electric safari buggy, getting much closer to nature than you might expect. It's a fantastic day out for families, couples and anyone who enjoys seeing something a little unusual.

Come hungry!

September is a particularly good month for food lovers.

The North Norfolk Food & Drink Festival takes place at Holkham on 5th and 6th September, bringing together local producers, food, drink and plenty of delicious things to sample. It's the perfect excuse for a day out at Holkham – although we recommend leaving a little room in the car for your purchases!

Experience the Sandringham Game & Country Fair

On 12th and 13th September, the Sandringham Game & Country Fair brings all sorts of country pursuits, animals, demonstrations, food and entertainment to the Sandringham Estate. It's a great choice for a day out if you enjoy the outdoors and a taste of traditional country life. And being so close to Sandringham is just one of the many advantages of staying at Happy Valley.

Something for the classic car fans

If beautiful old cars are your thing, King's Lynn Classic Car Day takes place on 13th September. With hundreds of classic vehicles on display in the historic town centre, it's a lovely excuse to combine a little car spotting with a wander around King's Lynn. And if classic cars aren't your thing, there are plenty of cafés, shops and historic buildings to keep you occupied.

Fancy something a little bonkers?

On 20th September, Hunstanton hosts its annual Soapbox Derby. Homemade vehicles, gravity, a hill and absolutely no engine. What could possibly go wrong?

It's free to watch and makes for a fun day out at the coast.

Take a wander around King's Lynn

September is also a lovely time to explore King's Lynn. Take a stroll through the historic centre, browse the independent shops, stop for lunch or coffee and see where the afternoon takes you. There's also a Merchants Market on 26th September, bringing local makers, producers and crafters to the Tuesday Market Place.

Or simply enjoy Norfolk

And this might be our favourite reason to visit in September. You don't have to fill every day. Go for a walk. Find a country pub. Visit the coast. Sit somewhere beautiful with a coffee. Come back to your luxury glamping cabin at Happy Valley and put your feet up, soak in the hot tub or take a wander through the woods.

September is a wonderful time to slow down and enjoy Norfolk without feeling that you need to tick everything off a list.

September at Happy Valley Norfolk

The best thing about a September stay is that you get a little bit of everything. Summer isn't quite over, autumn is just beginning, the beaches are quieter and there are still plenty of lovely days to spend outdoors. So if you've been thinking about a Norfolk getaway, perhaps September is your sweet spot.

Not too busy. Not too hot. Not quite autumn. Just Norfolk.
